A Brazilian Master
Prof. Antonio Candido de Mello e Souza will turn 80 next year. A former professor from Universidade de Sao Paulo and a visiting scholar in many other universities in the USA and Europe, Antonio Candido is considered one of the most important (if not, the "hotest" name) in the literary critics field in Brazil. His works have been translated into English, French and Spanish quite often and altought retired now he keeps writing and mainly advising auhors and students.I'm myself a small example of one of the ones that has been the pleasure and satisfaction to work under this advises. "Literatura e sociedade", the original title of this book is considered one of his most consistent works ever. If interested in a deep and serious analyses of Brazilian literature, the title is a MUST READ!

The anvils of destiny : an introduction to cyberdynamics
Published in Unknown Binding by Cyberdynamic Press ()
Author: Howard Robb
Average review score:

elegant analysis of history
The author sets forth a very clear and understandable explanation of how civilization came to be. his major thesis is that humans are all equally intelligent both now ansd in the past, however geography and physical environment has been the single underlying condition for how well that intelligence can be employed. This book debunks many of the myths in the official version of history, particularly taking a more negative view of religion, and refuting the idea that progress is always a perpetual linear upwards trek. I highly recomend this to any student of history, or anthropology. It is light reading for anyone

What poetry should be... sublime, thoughtful and interesting
This is a near perfect book of poems. Dive in and find yourself in a world of words that fills your mind with thought provoking images. It is strong. It is simple yet challenges the creative side of your brain to see things differently. This is what fine poetry is all about. I only wish the book were longer...
Quite simply, beautiful.

Architecture in Italy, 1500-1600 (Yale University Press Pelican History of Art)
Published in Paperback by Yale Univ Pr (November, 1995)
Authors: Wolfgang Lotz and Deborah Howard
Average review score:

Architectural History at its Best
Wolfgang Lotz's Architecture in Italy, 1500-1600 is a wonderful introduction and survey of the majesty of Italian Renaissance Architecture. I had the privilage of studying under Richard Tuttle who is recognized in the introduction, who showed me the brilliance of Lotz's work as well as his ability to show the beauty of architecture. This book is a must for any serious academic student or architectural enthusiast. Lotz's presentation of Italian Architecture is a continuation of Ludwig Heydenreich's Architecture in Italy, 1400-1500, and when read together is certainly the definitive work on Renaissance Architecture. The marvelous pictures and diagrams are the best published images I have come across.

The Architecture of John F. Staub: Houston and the South
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (October, 1979)
Authors: Howard Barnstone, Stephen Fox, and Jerome Iowa
Average review score:

Barnstone's "The Architecture of John F. Staub"
This is a comprehensive and intelligent study of the work of John Staub, who designed many of the most notable structures in Houston (both domestic architecture and commercial structures). He designed an incredible number of buildings, and not only in Houston, but in other parts of the country. For a student of architecture, and for someone interested in the history of Houston, this book is a must.

Archives of Memory: A Soldier Recalls World War II
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Kentucky (March, 1991)
Authors: Alice M. Hoffman and Howard S. Hoffman
Average review score:

Showing the Best for Oral History and Memory Research
Throughgoing in pioneering scholarship and artistic in execution, this unique wife-husband collaboration advances the art of oral history, butresses the case for using memory and recognition in histories, and reads like a fine novel. Thanks to Alice's interviewing craft, Howard's rich memories of his varied WW11 experiences are validated. Oral history techniques are thereby improved, and the reader is treated all along to a very good read. Bold in conception, careful in completion, the book will reward all curious about the strengths and limitations of recall and recognition as scholarly aids. Any others open to learning more truth than ever about war will also be well rewarded

Ark of Death
Published in Audio Cassette by Books in Motion (December, 1996)
Authors: Howard H. Hilton and Kevin Foley
Average review score:

Ark of Death
The Ark of Death by Howard Hilton is an excellent mystery. Hilton does a wonderful job of weaving details throughout the story that become significant at a later point in time, particularly in his character development. You also get a bit of a history and geography lesson at the same time, without feeling like you have. The cassette tapes of Ark of Death are especially enjoyable because the reader brings the characters and their various accents to life.

You'll want to listen to or read other works by this same author.

Art and Eskimo Power: The Life and Times of Alaskan Howard Rock
Published in Paperback by Epicenter Press (January, 1992)
Author: Lael Morgan
Average review score:

A courageous Eskimo journalist
The shaman predicted that Howard Rock would become a great man. He was born in 1911 in a sod igloo in Point Hope, an ancient Eskimo village in northwest Alaska where the people had hunted whales and lived off the land for centuries. Instead of becoming a hunter, Howard became an accomplished artist and crusading newspaper editor. He helped defend his people from a controversial Atomic Energy Commission proposal to excavate a harbor near the village with an above-ground atomic blast. Then Rock founded the Tundra Times and helped Alaska's Native people press their aboriginal land claims before Congress, ultimately winning a settlement. Deeply moving.

Art Education and Human Development (Occasional Papers, Series 3)
Published in Paperback by Getty Ctr for Education in the Arts (March, 1991)
Author: Howard E. Gardner
Average review score:

Thinking & Expression
Being an artist and teaching art, I found that Gardner's paper put into words so much of what an artist does naturally. Incorporating reflection about one's own artwork, about a classmate's, and about the "masters" is so very important in teaching art and in bringing children to think critically and creatively. By interweaving reflection with expression, Gardner has identified the cognitive science that can take place so naturally in the art classroom. Another book which also expounds on the importance of thinking skills and how naturally that can be achieved in art education is Perkin's Intelligent Eye. I highly recommend Gardner's book, especially to art educators in the field.
